Built almost from scratch by the Medici grand dukes in the late 16th century, Livorno was designed as a free port open to all nationalities and religions. Ferdinando I's Leggi Livornine of 1591 and 1593 invited persecuted communities to settle, creating one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Mediterranean. Sephardic Jews, Greeks, Armenians, and English merchants all established quarters, and the city grew rapidly around its Venetian-style canal network known as the Quartiere Venezia.
About 157,017 residents live in Livorno today. Heavy Allied bombing in 1943-44 destroyed much of the historic centre, but the Fortezza Vecchia at the harbour entrance survived and remains the city's most recognisable landmark. Terrazza Mascagni, an elegant chequered seafront promenade named after the composer Pietro Mascagni (born here in 1863), offers panoramic views across to the islands of Gorgona and Capraia. The Accademia Navale, Italy's naval officer training school since 1881, occupies a sprawling complex along the waterfront.
